 What is Astronomy?

Astronomy is the study of our universe beyond Earth. Everything we know about the sun, moon, planets, stars and much more comes from astronomy. Astronomers use mathematics, physics, and chemistry, as well as their signature tool, the telescope, to understand our universe.

The first modern astronomer was the Polish scientist Nicolaus Copernicus. Known as the father of astronomy, Copernicus proposed in 1532 that the Earth revolves around the sun. This was the opposite of the long-held belief that everything in space revolved around the Earth.

Although true, Copernicus's theory was not proven until 1632 when the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei proved that the planets revolved around the sun. He made this revolutionary discovery using a telescope and was the first person to use it to explore the universe.

In the centuries since Copernicus and Galileo, astronomers have continued to make amazing discoveries, from black holes to Jupiter's moons. They also put forward incredible theories. The most popular is the Big Bang theory, which holds that our universe began billions of years ago with the explosion of a single hot, dense point of mass and has been expanding ever since. Another is the theory of dark energy, a hypothetical type of energy that acts in opposition to gravity. If true, this could explain why our universe is expanding so rapidly.

Want to celebrate astronomy? Join Astronomy Day!

A great way to learn more about astronomy is to celebrate Astronomy Day. Astronomy Day celebrated twice a year in April/May and September/October, is a time for stargazing. This month, on October 9, you can see the first quarter Moon. According to the Farmers Album, this is a great time to see the stars because the sky is very dark during this period (you can use a telescope or a pair of high-powered binoculars). There are many other ways to celebrate astronomy. Check local planetarium and museum schedules where you live. You can also join a local astronomy club.
